Sinds de oprichting in 1987 wordt het Balanescu Quartet gezien als een van de belangrijkste eigentijdse ensembles van dit moment. De drijvende kracht achter het kwartet is de uiterst virtuoze Roemeense violist en componist Alexander Balanescu, die samen met zijn muzikanten steeds weer grenzen verlegt en nieuwe onbekende territoria ontdekt. De nieuwste cd is echter zelfs binnen het repertoire van het kwartet een bijzondere: samen met de Roemeense zangeres Ada Milea heeft Alexander zich laten inspireren door het stuk ‘The Island’ van de Roemeense surrealistische schrijver Gellu Naum.
Alexander Balanescu & The Balanescu Quartet
Alexander Balanescu is een van de opwindendste violisten van onze tijd, met een duidelijke visie en bovendien een bevlogen componist. Hij studeerde viool aan de gerenommeerde Juilliard-school in New York en was van 1983 tot 1987 lid van het Arditti Quartet. Daarna richtte hij het Balanescu Quartet op. Door de samenwerking met mensen als Michael Nyman en Gavin Bryars, maar ook door projecten met o.a. Ornette Coleman, David Byrne, Kate Bush en de Pet Shop Boys heeft het kwartet een geheel eigen stijl van componeren ontwikkeld, puttend uit hedendaags klassiek, avant-garde, rock en wereldmuziek.
De optredens zijn eveneens een belevenis, met een energie en dynamiek die eerder doet denken aan een rockgroep. Balanescu schrijft al het materiaal voor het kwartet, vaak in opdracht (voor moderne dans, televisie of film) en is constant op zoek naar manieren om zijn muziek in een nieuwe context te presenteren.
Ada Milea
Ada Milea is in 1975 geboren in Tirgu Mures (Roemenië), afgestudeerd aan de Dramatic Arts University. Van 1997 tot 1999 werkte ze als actrice bij het Nationale Theater van Tirgu Mures, maar ging daarna zelfstandig verder. Ze experimenteert met de relatie tussen theater en muziek en treedt ook op als zangeres, van Roemenië tot de VS.
The Island
Nadat Alexander Balanescu in de jaren ‘90 voor het eerst terugkeerde naar Roemenië, gingen zijn ‘roots’ een steeds belangrijkere rol in zijn muziek spelen. Aan het eind van dat decennium ontdekte hij Ada Milea, wier werk hij hoogst origineel en erg moedig vond. In het nieuwe millennium wilden ze samen van start gaan met een project dat ze geen van beiden ooit ondernomen hadden. Ada suggereerde om daarvoor het toneelstuk ‘The Island’ van de bekende Roemeense surrealistische schrijver Gellu Naum als basis te gebruiken. Dat stuk is weer gebaseerd op het verhaal van Robinson Crusoe.
The Island is ook voor het Balanescu Quartet een bijzonder project, een soort mini-opera waarbij muziek en tekst elkaar perfect aanvullen. De teksten zijn hilarisch en absurdistisch, de muziek is briljant en meeslepend.

Since its formation in 1987, the Balanescu Quartet has acquired a reputation as one of the leading contemporary ensembles in the world The driving force behind the quartet has always been the virtuoso violinist and composer Alexander Balanescu, who leads his musicians across musical frontiers into new unchartered territory. Alexander Balanescu & The Balanescu Quartet
Alexander Balanescu is one of the most exciting violinists of our time with a clear vision. He is also a prolific composer. He studied the violin at the Juilliard school in New York and was a member of the Arditti Quartet from 1983 until 1987. Hereafter he formed his own Balanescu Quartet. Working with people like Michael Nyman and Gavin Bryars, but also through projects with e.g. Ornette Coleman, David Byrne, Kate Bush and the Pet Shop Boys the quartet has developed a highly individual style of composing, using contemporay classical music, avant-garde, rock and world music as inspiration.
The live performances are notable for their sheer energy and dynamism, more characteristic of a rock band rather than a string quartet. Balanescu writes all the material for the quartet, often for modern dance performances, television or film, and is constantly looking for possibilities to present his music in a new context.
Ada Milea
Ada Milea is born in 1975 in Tirgu Mures (Romania) and graduated from The Dramatic Arts University of Tirgu Mures. She was an actress between 1997 and 1999 at the National Theatre of Tirgu Mures, after which she decided to be an independent artist. She experiments with the links between theatrical and musical fields. She also gives many concerts as a singer, from Romania to the USA.
The Island
After Alexander Balanescu’s return to Romania in the ‘90s, after an absence of over 20 years, his roots became more and more important to him. At the end of that decade he came across Ada Milea, whose work he thought to be highly original and courageous. In the new millenium they wanted to work on something that neither of them had attempted before. Ada came up with the idea to use the play ‘The Island’ by the great Romanian surrealist writer Gellu Naum. In turn ‘The Island’ is based on the story of Robinson Crusoe.
The Island is a special project, even for the Balanescu Quartet. It is a mini-opera with text and music in perfect harmony. The texts are hilarious and slightly absurd, the music is thrilling and fascinating.
