Op 1e Kerstdag zendt de EO-televisie een kerstspecial uit over Moya Brennan. Zij zal daarin een aantal nummers zingen van haar album An Irish Christmas (FIERCD 19).
2007 has been busy for Moya. Nominated for Best Irish Female and receiving Lifetime Achievement at Ireland’s Meteor Awards she has completed tours of the UK, Germany and USA, played in Croatia and at the Glastonbury Festival and performed a ground-breaking concert with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
She ends the year on a seasonal note with her own
Christmas Special on Dutch EO TV.
A live album and new recordings are already planned for 2008 along with an eagerly anticipated Dutch tour in April. Moya will also travel to Tanzania in February in support of the blind charity, CBM.MOYA has been at the heart of some wonderful records. Having enjoyed many years as the voice of Clannad, one of Ireland’s most respected acts she has also created a successful career as a solo artist. Her music has graced international film soundtracks, spiritual recordings, several television series and even dance anthems. Her status as an iconic singer is assured. And she rightly believes that her most recent solo release, Signature, was another special moment.
Moya recorded Signature in her home studio along with her band who are drawn from the cream of young Irish talent.
While Clannad took time off from recording and touring Moya has increasingly enjoyed the freedom to explore her own writing and recording and now has seven solo albums to her name, two of which have been nominated for Grammy Awards!
She now holds the world stage in her own right – she has performed for the US President on Capitol Hill and twice appeared at World Youth Day, most recently in front of nearly 1 million people on Pope Benedict’s visit to Cologne in 2005.
Moya has come a long way since the early days of Clannad. Back in the mid 70s this ground breaking folk band from County Donegal (which for a period in the 80s included sister, Enya) were largely misunderstood by the musical community in Ireland and took their music to Europe, where their mix of traditional tunes and contemporary influences fell on eager ears. They effectively created what is now known as Celtic Music.
To date, Clannad have sold around 15 million records.
Moya and two of her brothers, Pol and Ciaran played their first shows with uncles, Noel and Padraig Duggan, in the family pub, Leo’s Tavern in the early 70s. All the band members spoke Gaelic as their first language, and their commercial chances seemed modest. However, they made a breakthrough record, ‘Theme From Harry’s Game’ in 1982, which reached number five in the UK charts, and appeared on the ‘Patriot Games’ soundtrack ten years later. In 1986, the Clannad release, ‘In A Lifetime’, found Moya sharing vocals with Bono from U2. A compilation, ‘Pastpresent’, reached number five in the UK albums chart in 1989. The band have won a Grammy Award (for 1997’s ‘Landmarks’), and have provided the theme music to ‘Last Of The Mohicans’ and ‘Robin Of Sherwood’, while Moya also sang the theme to ‘Circle Of Friends’ in 1995.
She has also collaborated with a host of musical luminaries including Paul Young, Bruce Hornsby, Joe Jackson, Robert Plant, Shane McGowan Paul Brady and Russell Watson.
In 1999 she scored a worldwide hit with Chicane on ‘Saltwater’ and last year worked and toured with Schiller on their current album, ‘Tag und Nacht’
In 2005, Moya collaborated with Hans Zimmer on the music score for ‘King Arthur’, also co-writing the theme song, ‘Tell Me Now’.
Moya’s interests and passions have also taken her around the world as Goodwill Ambassador for the blind charity, CBM. From the slums of Brazil to the deep jungle of Congo, she has experienced their work first hand and gone on to share it with the wider world. During her work with CBM in 2004 she had to flee civil unrest in Kinshasa, Congo and in 2006 performed alongside Pele’s wife, Assiria, in fundraising concerts in Brazil.
Moya explains her involvement: “CBM approached me out of the blue through my website. I get quite a lot of requests for charity involvement but this was like an arrow to my heart. This was something that I felt was making a huge difference to thousands of outcast people all over the world by using simple methods and empowering local skilled workers”.
Moya’s solo albums include ‘Maire’ (1992), ‘Misty Eyed Adventures’ (1995), ‘Perfect Time’ (1998) and the Grammy nominated ‘Whisper To The Wild Water’ (1999), Two Horizons (2003), ‘An Irish Christmas’ (2005) and ‘Signature’ (2006)
